Melissa and Pauline talked about a new program called Dance Mechanix gives back.
We would like our girls to be able to give back to the community. These girls
are very fortunate that they are able to dance and there are plenty of families
out there who just have trouble buying groceries. We are planning a can drive.
If you bring 2 non perishable items to registration or dance class in September,
you will receive a free raffle ticket. There will be a give away of 3 prizes.
These items will be donated to Chip In in Charlton. Someone is going to talk to
Ted’s about us maybe collecting in front of the store. Charlton Villager will be
doing an article about it as well. We also talked about possibly doing
Thanksgiving baskets for a couple of families in Charlton that may be struggling
during the holiday season. If anyone has contacts with any of the churches in
town and know of a family in need, please let Melissa or one of the officers
know. We also discussed possibly doing a mitten tree and a coat drive. Anyone
interested could put a pair of mittens on the tree or donating any old winter
coats and they would be donated to a shelter. Some other ideas were to see if
the girls could volunteer at the Masonic Home or if they could actually work at
Chip In.
The other new concept that Melissa and Pauline discussed was finding a way to
have the whole studio united. It has come to Melissa’s attention that some of
the younger girls are feeling left out at times. We need to find away to have
the studio not so divided, as in recreational dancers and competition dancers.
There are a few recreational mothers who have expressed some interest in joining
the Parents Group as Non competition representatives. They would come to the
meetings and then bring the information back to the other recreational parents.
They would be able to participate in the fundraising if they wanted to. They
understand that the money wouldn’t help them right now and that it is for the
competition dancers. Because they would be helping out the competition dancers,
the dancers would then do something nice for the little girls. We are going to
be starting a Big Sister – Little Sister program. Any competition dancer who is
interested will be assigned 2 to 3 little girls as their little sister. You
should only take on a little sister if you are willing to put in the effort. We
do not want any little sister getting their feelings hurt because they had a bad
experience with this program. The requirements are that you will need to invite
your little sister to 2 events throughout the dance year, you will have to give
them a birthday card (all the supplies will be provided and you can leave it in
their folder), you must go to 1 observation of theirs or invite them to one of
yours (there will be special time set aside for a Big sister observation and a
Little sister observation), and you must have contact with them once a month
(whether it is their birthday month or an observation or just sending them a
little note). We will also have little events that you can invite your little
sister to, like painting their nails and a Christmas party. These little girls
look up to the big girls so much and this will give so much joy to all the
girls, big and little.
The girls will be performing at the Library on August 18th at 10:30 a.m. Please
let Melissa know ASAP if you will be able to participate in this performance.
Also the activities council will be having a talent show on July 25th at the
grange hall. We are going to be able to sell water and candy. If anyone is
interested in signing up, please let us know ASAP.
Also discussed was the sign up sheet for the snack table. There will be a sign
up sheet just like last year. You have until December to sign up to become a
snack parent. This will work the same as last year. Also, if you are at the
studio and no one is signed up to do snack and you are going to be there, please
take the snacks out. The girls can’t buy snacks if they are not out.
We also talked about whether we wanted to do the leotard swap and shoe sale
again. Melissa also mentioned that if someone wanted to take orders for shoes
and tights she would provide the information to us, but she doesn’t have the
time to do it. Right now people go and get their shoes on their own. Melissa
recommends Village Dance in Sturbridge or Dancers Warehouse in Milford. If
anyone is interested in the leotard swap again, please let us know.
There will be a start the year off meeting on August 28th at the Library. This
will be a time where the whole studio will meet and people can meet the teachers
and assistant teachers and also the parents group. I will get back to you with a
time on this.
The next Parents Group meeting will be on September 12th at 7:00 p.m.
